Western vs Chinese Medicine. What's the difference?

Western healthcare often organises treatment around specialised areas of practice, while traditional Chinese medicine offers a holistic and highly individualised approach. Rather than viewing a health concern in isolation, it considers the relationship between a person’s symptoms, constitution and overall state of wellbeing.

Treatment is then tailored to the individual not simply to the name of a condition. For example, from a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, an imbalance affecting the Spleen and Stomach may be associated with patterns such as dampness accumulation, qi deficiency or blood deficiency. Depending on the individual, these patterns may present as bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, fluid retention, low energy, fatigue or muscle weakness.

In the same way, two people experiencing insomnia may have very different underlying patterns. One person’s sleep disturbance may be associated with internal heat or Liver disharmony, while another’s may relate to qi and blood deficiency or yin deficiency. Although the main concern may appear similar, each person’s overall presentation and therefore their treatment approach may be different.

At Mei Hanbang Clinic, we take the time to understand your health concerns, constitution and individual pattern from a traditional Chinese medicine perspective. Guided by a holistic philosophy, each treatment plan is thoughtfully tailored to address your unique presentation and support your overall health and wellbeing, rather than focusing on symptoms alone.
