Moxibustion is a traditional therapy used in traditional Chinese medicine  that involves the gentle warming of specific acupuncture points or areas  of the body using processed mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris). The heat  produced by moxa is used to support circulation, regulate the flow of Qi  and Blood, and warm areas of the body where cold or deficiency patterns  are present. At Mei Hanbang Clinic, moxibustion may be used alongside  acupuncture when clinically appropriate.

Moxibustion can be applied in several ways, including indirect moxa held  near the skin, moxa attached to acupuncture needles, or the use of  smokeless moxa products. The method and duration are selected  according to the patient’s condition and comfort. Many patients  experience a gentle, penetrating warmth and a sense of relaxation during  treatment.

Potential benefits

Moxibustion is commonly used where warming and stimulation of  circulation are indicated. It may be helpful for individuals experiencing  muscular stiffness associated with cold or tension, fatigue, digestive  weakness, or certain women’s health concerns such as menstrual  discomfort. The therapy is often used to support recovery, improve local  circulation and promote overall balance within a treatment plan that may  also include acupuncture or herbal medicine.

Patients often report a soothing sensation and a feeling of warmth and  relaxation following treatment. As with all traditional therapies, responses  vary between individuals and treatments are tailored to the patient’s  presentation and needs.

Potential risks and safety

Moxibustion is generally safe when performed by a trained and registered  practitioner. However, as heat is involved, there is a small risk of minor  burns or skin irritation if the treatment is not appropriately monitored. At  Mei Hanbang Clinic, indirect and controlled techniques are used to  minimise risk, and the practitioner closely monitors the level of heat  throughout the session.

Some patients may notice mild redness or temporary sensitivity in the  treated area after treatment. The smell of moxa may linger on clothing or  skin for a short period. Moxibustion may not be suitable in certain  situations, such as in areas of reduced sensation, active inflammation,  fever, or for individuals with specific medical conditions. Patients are  encouraged to inform the practitioner of any relevant health concerns,  pregnancy, or sensitivity to smoke before treatment.

All treatments are provided with explanation and informed consent.  Moxibustion is used only where clinically appropriate and can be modified  or omitted according to patient preference.
